Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you?

I'm a 27-year-old software developer living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Some of the many things that interest me include: Physics, math, history, politics, religion, The Simpsons, Futurama, NOFX, computer hardware and software, Ninendo Wii, and lots of other nerdy and uncool stuff.

What is this site?

This is my personal website and blog. It's probably more interesting to read if you know me personally, but I have a wide variety of interests so it's possible you might find something that interests you. You can submit comments on my posts and engage in discussions if you're so inclined.

The site is broken into sections, including blog, reviews (of books and video games), quotations, and nerdy programming stuff.

Do I need to be logged in to submit a comment?

No, the login is only necessary if you want your posts linked to a profile or if you want an avatar (small picture) included with your posts. It also allows you to customize how you view the site, such as sorting posts in different orders or using alternate stylesheets.

I saw your site in my referral log, but I don't see a link to my site on the referring page. Why is that?

Logged-in users of FaneHenderson.com are able to change how the site is viewed. When they looked at the site, there probably was a link to your site. (Probably in a blogroll on the left side.)

Why does your site look so horrible?

This is a personal project, not a commercial endeavor. I wanted the fun of programming the site myself and I'm more interested in functionality than form. Many of the quirks on the site have evolved as I have added features I didn't originally plan for. Believe it or not, however, I used to be a programmer at a commercial web company!

Can you bore me with some technical details I don't care about?

I have a VPS from RimuHosting. A VPS is cheaper than a private server, but has many of the same advantages. For example, I can log in as an administrator and install (or delete) anything I want. You can't do that with typical web-hosting.

The site originally used a template from Macromedia Dreamweaver which may still be recognizable, but significant changes have been made since then. The dynamic aspects of the site were programmed in PHP using MySQL as a backend.

What is that SETI@home and Einstein@home stuff on your page?

BOINC is a program that allows me to donate unused processing power to scientists. SETI@home and Einstein@home are two of the projects that use that power. The higher my "credit," the more computing power I've donated to that project recently.

What the heck is that RSS thing?

The RSS service lets you use an RSS reader to see updates to my page as soon as they happen. It's very XML-y and all the cool kids are doing it.

If that sounds too complicated for you, you may wish to receive updates via email:

The Daily Email Update sends you an email once per day. It summarizes all the updates made to the page the previous day, including user-submitted comments.
Email:
The Comment Update sends you an email every time someone submits a comment. In theory, you could get an awful lot of email by subscribing to this, but it is typically 0-10 emails per day.
Email:

The RSS feed is too cluttered because of all the user comments. Is there anyway to just see new entries and stuff?

Sure. Try this modified feed instead of the normal feed.

So, um, Hawaiian shirts, um. . . ?

I'm not gay. But thanks for asking.
